Islamophobia

Just left the following comments on a facebook post of this article and figured I'd put it here as well:

"Really good article but I think like so many others today he's missing the centrality of Islamophobia (which has a built in anti-immigrant component) to this new right's appeal and agenda. I actually think that Tea Partiers and particularly those around Glenn Beck are careful about anti-black racism. As much as they hate the whole idea of "diversity" and mutliculturalism there clearly was an effort to make sure that there was some people of color on stage (see Robert JEnsen's description at http://www.texasobserver.org/thewholestar/item/16898-glenn-becks-redemption-song). There were blacks and latinos but no way would they have a muslim. Even in terms of Obama, remember that the racism during the election was couched in anti muslim and anti-immigrant (birthers) racism and not explicity anti black racism, even though that that was clearly the case."
