Have we officially entered an "age of austerity"—and if so, what is our exit strategy? As corporations and banks post record profits in the wake of massive bailouts, the bill for this rescue operation has been laid at the door of the working-class and oppressed. Unions and community organizations—our last line of defense—have come under ideological assault.
But recent events give us hope that there could be a mounting refusal to pay for the crisis. Mass uprisings from Wisconsin to the Arab World pose political questions—both new and old—for activists organizing a response to the crisis. Still, for many of us who are not only building the resistance but are also fighting for an anti-capitalist alternative, there continue to be no easy answers.
Finding those answers requires broad dialogue and coordination among Left activists and organizers, pointed towards a long-needed renewal of the radical political space in the US. We hope that this year's Solidarity Summer School will in some way be a contribution to this process.
Join activists from around the country for two days of debate and discussion at Philadelphia's Temple University! Workshops, plenaries and cultural events held throughout the school will take up the past and present of our movements and the Left—and what the future holds for us in a rapidly changing world.
So what can you expect at this year’s school? Plenaries and workshops held throughout the school will build on each theme in depth. Cultural activities drawing on what Philadelphia has to offer (including a walking tour of murals like the one featured above!) will be planned for the afternoon of Thursday, July 28 and you better bet there will be entertainment every night!
Affordable housing will be available through Temple University, where doubles and singles cost around $30-35/night. Discounted room rates at downtown hotels easily accessible by subway will also be available.
Start making your travel plans now! We encourage comrades planning on attending the whole summer school to arrive the evening of July 26 as proceedings get underway at 10 AM on the 27th. The school ends at Noon on the 29th, but comrades planning on staying for the Solidarity National Convention should plan to leave on flights departing 6 PM and after on the 31st.
