Earthquakes, wind and building codes

I'm writing this partly in response to the previous post, "I was thinking that Chile." I grew up in San Francisco, where there are earthquakes and wind almost all the time. I think that major damage occurs when a) building codes are not strictly enforced, b) when the builders have built in dangerous areas or c) when buildings/bridges are not kept up. It seems to me the point of the original blog was to point out how Chile's infrastructure and building codes had been allowed to deteriorate under the "market rules" of the Pinochet regime.

The United States has let its infrastructure fall into great disrepair! Part of putting people back to work should be prioritizing infrastructure--as well as developing renewable energy and mass transportation.
